Let’s Try That Again

Oh hey— it’s been a while.

365 days to be exact. I ‘started’ my newsletter April 17th, 2024 and wrote exactly once.

oops.

But really— I’m ok with this. I could talk about the external reasons I didn’t follow through, like how that time ended up being quite chaotic for me personally. However, at the end of the day, it comes down to I just didn’t write.

I want to start again.

Thankfully I started at 0 so this can still be my ‘1st newsletter’. (Look at Past Victor looking out for me.)

My motivation for putting out a newsletter is still to put my thoughts out there. It’s mostly to be able to look over at myself (Hi Future Victor!) and if what I share happens to interest someone else, awesome!

I had a peak at my 0th newsletter (don’t worry about reading it— past Victor is dead) and a lot still holds for what I want to write. Definitely a lot of potential of sharing that I haven’t done.

What to expect?

tl;dr I’d like this to be a somewhat ‘light’ periodic share of my thoughts, things I made, and things I find interesting.

Obviously my track record is not great, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Content

In short, I very much still want to share a variety of things.

Just to give you a quick sample of what I’m playing around with, I have a few drafts on some different topics:

Those are the draft posts I have write now but I’m hoping that gives a feel for what I’m going for. I like technical stuff (especially on machine learning since that’s my focus), but I also want to share more reflection stuff too.

I read every now and again. I’d love to share more about re-reading the Animorphs series.

Also having a place to share little creations would be nice. There are a few coding side projects that could interesting to put out there. I have been looking at making some more explanation YouTube videos.

Timing

I’d love to be diligent enough to make a weekly newsletter. But an empty year of posts seems to suggest that’s unlikely. In my head this will be closer to a monthly or if I’m good, bimonthly affairs.

But don’t hold me to it 😅 Consider my newsletter to be a surprising notification of whimsy. (Or an only slightly periodic annoyance.)

What’s different this time?

So long Substack— I hardly knew thee

One change is that I want to move off of Substack. I was already hesitant a year ago but now I really want to control my own stuff as much as possible. So instead, I’ll be putting everything on my website: victorsothervector.com

I figure even if I setup something that’s janky & held together together with duct tape & bent nails, at least it’s my jank. I’m also not tricking myself that I plan to monetization blah blah. (I’m serious about this being for enjoyment. So serious.)

The plan is to move the email list off this platform and simply point to my own hosted blog post. I don’t know when I’ll do that exactly. I also don’t know how much will change so, er, thanks for sticking with me!

Or not— I’m cool if you want to unsubscribe. I’ll still be here. I just have to figure out how to make unsubscribing work (and subscribing!) in a post-Substack world. Gonna let Future Victor take care of that XD

Being social can be fun

Also, I’ve been enjoying using Bluesky for stuff. I really like that I can use ATProtocol that Bluesky is built on top of to do things. I’ve been playing around with embedding my Bluesky posts & comments on webpages.

So the plan is that these blog posts with the newsletter will have a little comment section using Bluesky. (Here’s my account by the way: @victorsvector.com)

That’s it

Sorry to make this newsletter after a year of nothing to be ‘so this is going to be what the newsletter will be about, but for reals this time’. But I felt like I needed a buffer between silence and putting something out there.

Good-byes are awkward

Especially when you’re awkward. So, uh… bye! (Until next time)
